China Shocking Reaction On Sela Tunnel - Progressing Towards All Weather Connectivity ( Arunachal Pradesh )

The Sela Pass tunnel project, located in Arunachal Pradesh and constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), is making significant strides despite challenges posed by extreme weather conditions. Designed to accommodate 3,000 petrol cars and 2,000 diesel trucks per day at a maximum speed of 80 kmph, this project aims to establish the longest bi-lane road tunnel in the world at an altitude exceeding 13,000 feet.

Utilizing the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) for excavation, the project has adapted to site conditions, resulting in adjustments to the lengths of Tunnel-1 (T1) and Tunnel-2 (T2). T1, now planned for 993 m, and T2, 1,591 m in length, are equipped with state-of-the-art electromechanical systems to ensure safety and efficiency.

Despite initial delays due to COVID-19, the project has accelerated, with the lining of the tunnel nearing completion and electrical and mechanical work progressing swiftly. Once operational, the tunnel will provide vital all-weather connectivity to the Tawang region, bypassing the challenges posed by heavy snowfall at Sela Pass during winters.

The project, with a sanctioned cost of Rs 687 crore, including maintenance expenses, is a testament to engineering ingenuity and perseverance. By offering a shorter and safer route, it not only enhances operational capability but also facilitates access to the region’s hydroelectric potential, fostering economic development.

While previous proposals faced cost and technical challenges, the current alignment promises efficient passage below the snow line, reducing travel time and accidents. With feasibility studies and detailed project reports in place, the Sela Pass tunnel project exemplifies a strategic endeavor towards enhancing connectivity and resilience in the Himalayan region.
