Beginning of constitution making

India celebrates Republic Day every year on 26 January but the reason is something other than the Constitution. In fact, after gaining independence from the British on 15 August 1947, our country was still without an official constitution. Therefore, on 29 August 1947, a committee was formed to draft the Constitution. This committee was headed by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar did it and K.M. Munshi, Muhammad Saadullah, Alladi Krishnaswami Iyer, Gopala Swami Iyengar, N. Madhava Rao, and T.T. Big giants like Ramakrishna were included.

Our constitution was made on 26th January

Then came 4 November 1947, an important day when the draft of the Constitution, the document that would guide the future of India, was prepared and presented before the Constituent Assembly. Over the next two years, the Constituent Assembly held several meetings, discussed the draft, made several changes and finally accepted it on 24 January 1950. This was a historic moment. 308 members signed two copies of the Constitution. One in Hindi and the other in English. This move established India as an independent republic. India’s own Constitution had now become the main legal document of the country, replacing the British Colonial Rule Act (1935). However, the Constituent Assembly decided to wait two more days to implement the Constitution. Within the next two days, the Indian Constitution came into force on 26 January 1950 and with this India became completely independent as a democratic republic. That’s why we celebrate Republic Day every year on 26 January and take pride in our Constitution.
