NASA unveiling a stunning image of NGC 2264, which appears like a celestial Christmas tree, complete with the imagery of a tree adorned with blue and white “ornaments” (stars) and green “pine needles” (nebula). NGC 2264, also called the “Christmas Tree Cluster,” is situated approximately 2,500 light-years away from Earth.
This breathtaking image was compiled using data collected from various telescopes. The blue and white stars emitting X-rays were detected by NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory. The green gas forming the backdrop of the cluster is the nebula surrounding it, observed using the WIYN 0.9-meter telescope on Kitt Peak (supported by the National Science Foundation). Additionally, the white stars in the foreground and background were sourced from the Two Micron All Sky Survey, which utilized infrared light to map the entire sky.
The unique aspect of the image is that it was rotated about 160 degrees clockwise so that the top of the celestial “tree” aligns with the top of the image. This differs from the typical orientation used by astronomers where the North is upward.
It’s a remarkable demonstration of the beauty found in the cosmos and the intricate technology and collaboration among telescopes and observatories that bring these cosmic wonders to our attention. Such discoveries often captivate our imagination and demonstrate the splendor of the universe.
