Pakistan recently blocked access to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, citing national security concerns. Despite X’s assurance of continued collaboration with the government, authorities have maintained the ban, sparking controversy. The decision came amidst allegations of vote manipulation and protests after the February elections. Activists challenge the ban, alleging it stifles dissent, while the government defends it as necessary for upholding national security. The Sindh High Court has ordered the platform’s restoration within a week, highlighting the ongoing debate over freedom of expression and digital rights in Pakistan.
Social media platform, referred to as X, was blocked in Pakistan due to national security concerns. Despite this, the platform is mentioned to continue its work with the Pakistani government to understand and address its concerns. The reasons behind the blockage seem to be related to the misuse of the platform and concerns about creating chaos and instability.
This development has sparked controversy, with activists seeing it as an attempt to suppress dissent, particularly after elections marred by allegations of vote rigging and protests. The decision to block the platform was reportedly based on confidential reports from intelligence and security agencies, citing the presence of “hostile elements” aiming to destabilize the country.
Some legal challenges have been mounted against the ban, with courts ordering the government to restore access to the platform within a week. However, access to the platform remains sporadic, with users resorting to virtual private networks to bypass restrictions.
It’s worth noting that the platform, formerly known as Twitter, plays a significant role in political discourse in Pakistan, particularly for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) party led by Imran Khan.
Overall, the situation reflects the complex interplay between national security concerns, freedom of expression, and the role of social media in shaping political narratives.
